Photoshoot 2

After previously taking pictures within a room of Orphan for the magazine advert we decided to reloate and take some photos that have meaning behind them.

We first decided to go to our local grave yard to take some pictures because Orphan is and orphan and with that being his edge would like to show that with in the ablum cover. We also took pictures in a studio to represent what Orphan does and took pictures with him and a female because it goes with the lyrics in the single. Here are a few pictures we took.I really like this photo because of the way it is focused on him and less focus on the background. I also like that it is in a studio. This represents what hes involvement in music.

I think this photo works well becuase the song we are doing is about Orphan being with a woman what will happen if he was to run out of money to provide for her. I like the way they are positioned because the focus is on Orphan and the girl behind his like the one over him to look after him and follow him. He is in the lead of her.

I feel this is another good picture of Orphan becuase it is him in studio in the middle of recording. It shows a bit of what this artist is about. I feel the way he is positioned and his facial expression tells the consumers what kind of music this is and says that Orphan is a hard working to come where he has come in the music industry and that his music should be appreciated becuase of the effort he is putting in.This picture shows all the 'Bling' that Orphan has alike other rapers. This represents what kinds of music he makes because 'Bling' is a connventions of a rap artist.

This is a distant picture of Orphan which really shows that he is in a grave yard under an arch of a church with his head down which shows the greif he has been through.

This picture of Orphan is taken at a low angle which makes he seem as important and in charge. I also shows that he is better that other rappers and he is looking down on them.

Photoshoot

We have been able to experiment with taking a professional photo shoot with john so that when we decided to do the real one with our artist it is perfect. We have been using the Nikon D40.

These are a few pictures we had taken. Some for fun and some to use as an idea of Orphans magazine advert.

I like this picture of Orphan because i think it represents what kind of artist he is. With the clothes he is wearing and the way they are on his body like the baggy jeans shows that he is a rap artist and appeals to his audience because young males of today look similar to this.

I like the way this picture has Orphan looking into the camera. It is as if he is looking directly at his audience but i don't think he has enough 'bling' on him for a rap artist and would look better if he had a long chain on and maybe a pair of sunglasses.

I like this picture because it is up close and personal with Orphan but don't think it would work well with advertising a concert or album/single release i think it is more of a picture that would be advertising the phone. I think it might work if the phone was more clear and on the screen of the phone it had the album art and the name of his song to show he is listening to his music.

Pliminary Task

I have been told to create a music video for the song 'F-word - Baby Bird'. It has to be a walking/dancing video with different people appearing in it. The video should have the running theme of young students saying "F**K EDUCATION!". The video should be as realistic as possible, but give the song title song a connection with disaffected youth.

I first decided to take a look at the original video for interest on what there theme was and how i might be able to make it different and hopefully better.

Then with in my group we came up with several ideas which follow the concept. We thought it would be a good idea to have a few shoots of a burning tie or burning a whole school uniform. We then noticed that we couldn't do this because none of us would be able to get hold of uniform we would be allowed to burn. We then had an idea of one student walking down one of the corridors within the college and as they passed the class rooms students would join them and as they joined they would all be throwing papers and making a riot. We then couldn't do this because we couldn't get enough students and classes empty for students to come from. we also realised that this would create to much mess. We then thought of doing a class room were everyone is bored and then start causing havoc and the teacher would become stressed then the students would start to bully them. We also had trouble with this idea because we couldn't find a class room and enough students for a class. Then the idea of a food fight in the canteen came up. We yet again had problems with this idea because it would case to much mess and to find students to be willing to get their clothes dirty. There was also the idea of a few shoots like students locking their teacher out of the room, burning work sheets and book and a student being told of by the head teacher.

We then came up with the idea of filming a few boys who go against the rules in college. I also decided to film a couple of students saying the phrase in an aggressive manor.

When editing the project i noticed that there was a lot of filming that i couldn't use because they either didn't go with the look i was looking for, they had mistakes or was a repeat of what i already had. Whilst editing i was having trouble because i kept think that it was a film instead of a music video so i was putting clips together in order and with the extra shoots finding it hard where to put them. I then decided to look at a few music videos to see how they put their shoots together. I noticed that many just put them when they heard a change in the music and then went back to the story they were telling.

We went for a trip to RickMix were there was a presentation call 'From MTV to YouTube: Studying Music Video'

It started off with a presentation by Pete Fraser the Cheif Examiner for OCR A Level Media Studies. He took us through the history of the music video, codes and conventions and top tips for making your own pop promo.

This was the first time music was put to images. Len Lye cut different film and changed it according to the music.

In this you can see the invetion of the scopitone. The scopitone is like a jukebox were you can pay to watch music videos. This was very popular when souldier first came back from war and in these times showing your legs was seen as very disrespectful which caused alot of response from communities.

Treatment and CD cover

We have started to do out treament over again because after looking at our last one we didnt have much details. Looking at the example of Eightball - My homeboy's girlfriend treatment by Christopher Erskin and N-Dubz - I need you by Ben Peters i relised that the two were very different. Christopher Erskins was very detailed treatment which went through every shoot describing everything visual and all the technical details. On the other hand Ben Peter's gives you a little outline then goes into the story then goes into detail and then shows a few visual preference. He did not explain any of the camera shoots.

Keith then showed us his idea of the album cover. I really liked his idea because it related alot to our character and is very good for a first idea. The ablum has orphan on it in a grave yard inbetween to grave stones which are of his mother and fathers. The ablum is dark and in black and white.

The problem is that it is not every eye catching. If it was next to aload of different covers it wouldnt stick out and it wouldn't get the consumers interested. These are examples of ablum covers that follow the same idea but i feel don't really catch your attention.

This ablum cover doesn't attract me because it is plain and dull. They have tried to make it more attractive by the colour of the font being bright in contrast with the backgroud. But this did not really work because you can not understand what it says because of the choice of font used and the whole cover doesn't tell you anything about the artist or the genre of music.

I think this is a good ablum cover because it catches your attention. The cover tells a story with them being in a toilet and the man on the floor and a womans foot on him makes you want to know who the people are and why they are in that postion. also the colours used. The colours and the situation give you an idea of the artist personality and the audience they are goinh for. This is also shown by the use of lettering. The letters look like graphity public toilets and relates to the name of the cover 'Good Girls Gone Bad' so it all has a rebilious feel to it and rebilious teenagers would feel a contection with this cover.

I feel it ours ablum cover could be improved by adding some colour to it. Maybe red or bright blue because these bright colours contrast againt the black making it more noticeable.

He then showed us hes treatment for N-dubz - I need you. It shows us how to format the treatment. He gives a brief outline of the story which is two paragraphs and then gives the whole story. He then gives alternatives which the artist might like and anything extra. He then gives some visual preferences. This shows really well how to sell your idea.

From his talk i was able to learn many things that will help me with my music video. A like my teacher Rob he explained how the image is everything in a music video. It is the only place where you can find strange and random images that make sense. For example a woman in a giant martini glass (which is in Frankie goes to Hollywood - Relax) would look rather odd but with the theme of the video and the music it seems normal to the viewer.

Trouble With Groups

This week i have been with my group (Chris, Ermiest, Leon). At first it was just me Chris and Ermiest and we were all doing independant work like researching on what music videos we like and creating our own ideas. We had completely different ideas and due to us not really knowing eachother had hardly communication between us. This made the work rather difficult because we were all going off on our own ideas when we did have a group disscussion would listen to eachother ideas but didnt think to combined them together. This led me to start on my own storyboard with my own ideas on the artist and the music i was going to use.



This is my storyboard that i had started. I didnt spend much time on it because i wasnt sure if we were going to go through with my idea and didnt want to waste time on something we werent going to use. I feel it could be im proved with more detail in not only the drawng but also what it going on in the shots.

Then the last time we meet up we were given a new memeber to our group, Leon. This only led to more difficulty becuase although he had not been in lessons had come up with a whole other idea with a different genre, artist and music video. Now it had become completely impossible to get an idea together as a group and i could feel us falling behind.

With all these problems i decided to talk to rob to see if i could possibly move groups so them i would be with people im more comfortable with and more able to compromise. I am not in Keith, Gaelle and Hidaya and although we havent got together as a group yet i feel that the production i am now doing is going to be better.

Introduction to Music Promo

Last year i did a film production which was the second time having worked with cameras and editing. Whilst doing this i encountered many problems but was able to learn from these mistakes and improve my skills. Our group on a whole had problems with the difficultly of us meeting up to film because we were filming off site and also we didn't realise the actor we had chosen had a lesson most of the time we were ready to film. We also had problems because allot of use weren't dedicated to the work so we didn't really come in extra to do the editing but now i have realised how important the editing is within the production as well as the filming. i was also able to learn how to used final cut express to create effects for example in the title sequence i was able to make it dark and change the speed to make it fit its genre. I also learnt how to used different camera angles and shoots to make it more interesting and now know how important editing is.

This year i have been told to create a music video, CD cover and a magazine article for an artist i have also created. i have so far started researching on music videos and the forms and conventions. I have looked at recent music videos which include allot of fast and bright editing.

I feel this is a good music video to look at because of all the editing used. Through out the video there is a new shot every 2-3 seconds which makes it fast and interesting. Viewers are likely to take notice of this video also because of all the bright colours and although it doesnt have a narrative you still feel the need to watch more to see what more is to come.

For this production i do not have to follow forms ad conventions but i am going to create mine own because i might just end up going off track and make a music video that is rubbish.


I also did research on CD covers. I watched the photo shoot of Michael Jackson's thriller album photo shoot. Because this ablum is know for being the best selling ablum and people of all age ranges know what the cover looks like i thought it would be a good idea to know what was the idea behind such a successful ablum.

I also went on to http://www.album-cover-art.org/ were it has loads of recent album covers which tells me for when I'm going to do mine because i can tell which ones catch my eye at first glance and use the techniques the cover uses for my own.








This is the new album cover from Jay Z called the blueprint 3. This looks like a simple cover but alot of work and thought went into it. The idea behind it is that blueprint is the foudation of a plan and the musical instruments are the blueprint behind the music and three stand for the thrid ablum from Jay Z since his plans to retire. The white is simply for purity and the red just stands off because the contrast between the two colours which makes it very noticable to the eye.
